Happy New Year, Cambridge Bay!

Yes, finally Brandon and Kamele Lyall arrived home with their beautiful children from their Christmas holidays. The community usually has fireworks on New Year’s Eve every year at midnight with the late Bill Lyall and family, but since his passing, Okittok’s grandson Brandon Lyall took over his papa’s tradition of putting on a fireworks display. It was held on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Many residents, some on snowmobiles others in vehicles, watched the fireworks from the shore of the bay by Lyall’s residence.

Many children can be heard all excited and having fun watching the display of bright colors shooting up into the night skies, making the Arctic Ocean look so beautiful and to remember Okittok. Many immediate family members had tears of love while remembering their loved ones who have passed on and wished each other a good new year.

Big thanks to Brandon, Kamele and their children for keeping the tradition going in memory of Bill Lyall. He was remembered as the fireworks and the community of Cambridge Bay rang in 2024. Quana Brandon. We are all so proud of you and quana to Jessie and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A nice way to start the new year off with fireworks. Rest Bill, your family did very well, and you were probably watching us all from above with smiles.

Also a New Year’s day parade of vehicles and snowmobiles was organized by Jeffrey Sather where many residents who owned vehicles drove around our community honking to welcome in the new year.

Happy New Year, everyone!

MLA Pamela Hakongak Gross held an open house down at the Qalgiat Elders Palace on Friday, Jan. 5. A delicious Arctic char chowder was being served. It was made by our famous restaurant Kuugaq Cafe served with bannock, tea and other refreshments. It was a time for our Elders and residents to gather and enjoy each other’s company and to have a talk or ask questions of our MLA Hakongak. Her constituency assistant Nancy Angulalik was present, and interpreting very professionally was Eva Ekeahoak Omilgoetok to Inuinnaqtut. It is always a joy to listen to Inuinnaqtut being spoken. Well done, Ekeahoak. Quana Hakongak for a fun day at your open house.

God Be With You Son. Your granddaughter is growing fast and you are a grandfather watching down on your family.
