Two-way race for Cape Dorset mayor

Two contenders have emerged for the mayor's seat in Cape Dorset.

Residents in Cape Dorset will have two choices for mayor in a Dec. 16 byelection.

Incumbent Timoon Toonoo is seeking re-election. He is being challenged by Eva Takiasuk.

The byelection is set for Dec. 16. An advance poll will be held on Dec. 9.

Cape Dorset hamlet cancel choice to hold a byelection after no nominees were officially declared for mayor in the Oct. 28 municipal election. Toonoo expressed interest in serving another term but he said he was unable to file papers due to medical travel.

Hamlet council also had the option of appointing a councillor to become the mayor.

Both candidates have until 5 p.m. on Friday to withdraw, if they so choose.
