The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet issued a news release May 16 extending condolences to Janes’ family.

Janes served six years as mayor and was a hamlet councillor for many years prior to that.

“He served his community with great dedication during this time and had always worked towards the best interest of the residents of Rankin,” the hamlet’s news release reads.

Deputy mayor Harry Towtongie will take over duties as mayor.

More to come.
