GN to hold two public meetings in Arviat to inform residents of liquor plebiscite implications

The Department of Finance will hold public meetings in Arviat on Oct. 29 at noon and 6 p.m. at the John Ollie Complex to discuss the upcoming Nov. 9 liquor plebiscite.

Representatives from Elections Nunavut will also be present.

With Covid-19 restrictions in place, a limit of 100 people will be permitted to attend each meeting.

On the ballot, residents will be asked whether they'd prefer to have restricted quantities of liquor allowed in the communities instead of the prohibition that exists now. If at least 60 per cent of voters are in favour of the change, it would mean Arviatmiut will be able to purchase or import 8.552 litres of beer (24 x 355ml cans) and 8 litres of wine (2 x 4 litre boxes or 10 x 750 ml bottles) every seven days.

Advanced plebiscite voting is scheduled for Nov. 2.
