GN expands raw fur shipment program

Harvesters will soon be able to ship raw, frozen fox and wolverine hides south at no cost.

Raw, frozen hides of foxes and wolverines can be shipped south on the GN’s tab, Environment Minister Joe Savikataaq announced Tuesday.

The Government of Nunavut (GN) is expanding its raw fur shipment program. Through that initiative, the GN has been covering the cost of shipping raw, frozen wolf hides for years. The territorial government is now adding fox and wolverine hides to the list, Environment Minister Joe Savikataaq announced in the legislative assembly on Tuesday.

“While demand for furs remains high, there has been a decline in participation of fur harvesting, and the goal of this expanded project is to increase the incentive for participation by harvesters,” Savikataaq said. “Indeed there is money to be made from fur harvesting, and I encourage Nunavummiut to get out there and take advantage of this opportunity.”
