Here's my son, who has been away for hockey, now into his fourth year. He goes out hunting when he comes back home. I took him out hunting to catch his own tuktu. I also caught my own.
But before we found the caribou, we found lots of wolf tracks that were so fresh. It was snowing that day and the tracks weren't covered yet, so we knew they were nearby.
While cutting up the caribou, it was getting late and dark, to the point we couldn't see two feet away without the flashlight and we were starting to freak out, wondering if the wolves could smell the blood. We fit one caribou on the ATV and we were going back to the road to put the one caribou onto the side-by-side to pick up the other tuktu we caught, but the side-by-side was gone and it had our extra gas on it.
We were almost on empty and said we only have enough to make it back to town, possibly have to walk part of the ways. We found out his dad took the side-by-side because someone told him it broke down and he had to tow it with the truck (we had the key). We were on empty when we reached town but made it to my mom's house to gas up. We told his dad he's going to get the other tuktu we had to leave because we couldn't go back for it due to no more gas or room on the ATV for it.
His dad went the next day and said the tuktu was frozen solid, it was like cutting quaq right from the start (cutting the fur). We were laughing and said teach you guys to make assumptions without any information. We were lucky we had the ATV and didn't walk to get the tuktu, we would have had go walk to town.
My son was happy to bring some tuktu south with him while he's in hockey academy. Always a good story of hunting when he comes to town.
One summer he spent almost two months at Kinggai'hangnanii, near Kazan River, living with his great grandmother there. A couple years after that he caught his first wolverine. I am looking forward to when he comes back home this summer. His name is Ian-Burton Attungala, in this photo he is 15.
