Baker Lake will be holding a byelection to choose their new MLA on April 27 according to a statement issued by the Government of Nunavut.

“It’s important that the by-election is held quickly, to ensure the constituents of Baker Lake are represented in the spring sitting of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly,” stated Premier Joe Savikataaq in a Thursday news release.

The writ for the election will be issued on March 23, 2020.

“We thank Mr. Mikkungwak for his dedication to his constituents and look forward to welcoming a new colleague to the House in the coming months,” Savikataaq said.

Mikkungwak was first elected as MLA of Baker lake in 2013 and was appointed to Speaker of the legislative assembly in May of 2019.

“I believe that the time has come for me to focus all of my energy on being with my family at home,” Mikkungwak said in the assembly.
