Week two gets underway at Canada Winter Games for Team NT and Nunavut

And so begins another week of the North’s best and brightest doing their thing at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

Week two officially got underway on Feb. 24 with three sports in action involving Team NT; Nunavut wasn’t in action. The boys and girls curling rinks took on Saskatchewan in the morning draw with the girls, represented by the Inuvik Curling Club foursome of Tyanna Bain, Pearl Gillis, Mataya Gillis and Adrianna Hendrick, dropping their game by a score of 7-3 while the boys rink from the Fort Smith Curling Club – Sawer Kaeser, Garret Minute, Tristan MacPherson and Caleb Brake – lost their opener, 7-2.

The evening draw saw both rinks square off with Manitoba with the girls on the wrong end of a 12-1 decision and the boys getting doubled up, 10-5.

The girls hockey team took on Prince Edward Island in their opening game on Sunday and were shut out, 4-0. P.E.I. did most of their damage in the first period, scoring three goals on goaltender Jamie Cluff, who made 32 saves in a losing cause.

Squash also started up on Sunday with both the singles and team competitions. Stephen Messier of Yellowknife was in the boys singles and ended up losing his first round match, ending his run. India Edwards of Yellowknife suffered the same fate on the girls side.

The team competition saw the players have a bit more success. The girls ended up dropping their opening match-up with Nova Scotia, 3-1 in matches. Edwards, the top-seeded girls player for the team, won her match. The boys, meanwhile, ended up tying Nova Scotia, 2-2 with Nathan Cluff of Yellowknife winning his match in five games and Colton Robertson of Yellowknife defeating his opponent in four games.

1 p.m. – Boys team competition (NT only)

3:30 p.m. – Girls team competition (NT only)
