Soccer success for Nunavut

For Coral Harbour, it was a trip that ended with success.

For Rankin Inlet, it was a case of very nearly.

Senior Super Soccer wrapped up in Yellowknife on May 6 and Coral Harbour made sure they went home winners as their U19 girls team captured the A banner by beating Diamond Jenness Secondary School from Hay River, NWT, by a score of 7-1 in the final.

Nunavut News was unable to contact the Coral Harbour team by press time.

For Rankin Inlet, the community's U15 girls squad got to the A final against St. Pat's High School of Yellowknife but came up a bit short as they ended up on the wrong end of a 5-0 decision.

Rankin Inlet's Sharona Nilaulak said after the match that her team still played a great game.

"It was challenging but we made it this far and I'm proud of our team," she said.

St. Pat's held down a 2-0 lead after the first half and Rankin Inlet had several good chances to tie things up, but weren't able to beat the St. Pat's goalkeeper. St. Pat's scored three more times in the second half to sew things up.

The loss in the final was just the second defeat the team had all tournament, but Nilaulak said it was still a good result.

"I'm proud that we played well," she said. "We have a silver medal and that's awesome."
This was Nilaulak's second time playing Senior Super Soccer in the U15 girls division. She played on the team that finished third in the AA division in 2017.

She's moving up to the U19 division beginning next season and said she's anticipating it.

"It's going to be another challenge but I'm looking forward to it," she said. "I hope we can win a banner next time."
A future edition of Kivalliq News will have the full story on Coral Harbour's win and a photo feature of some of the players in action over the course of the tournament.
