Resolute’s new mayor resigns

Resolute is in need of a new mayor. Joyce Laprise, elected as the hamlet's leader on Dec. 11, submitted her resignation at the council meeting on Feb. 5.

Resolute Mayor Joyce Laprise informed hamlet council on Feb. 5 that she is stepping down. Laprise was elected on Dec. 11.

Asked whether she provided a letter of explanation to hamlet council, Laprise told Nunavut News, "No, not yet."

She refused to elaborate on her reason for stepping down.

"I'd just like to leave it at that if I could, please," she said.

Deputy mayor Tabitha Mullin said hamlet council will discuss how to fill the mayor's seat at the next council meeting, which is scheduled for Feb. 19.

As of Feb. 7, Mullin didn't have an explanation for Laprise's unexpected exit as the community's elected leader.

"The office has not received the letter yet. I can't answer any of that at the moment," said Mullin.

Laprise prevailed in the Dec. 11 municipal election with 22 votes, a slim margin of victory over Saroomie Manik and Wayne Davidson, who each garnered 20 votes.

Resolute only recently filled a key position within the hamlet office. Newly-hired senior administrative officer Daryl Dibblee was settling into his job this week. Dibblee has previously served as SAO in several Nunavut communities including Sanikiluaq, Grise Fiord and Hall Beach.
