Rabid fox in Cape Dorset

by Derek Neary- December 17, 2017

The Department of Health has confirmed that a fox in Cape Dorset has rabies.

It is the third rabid fox reported in Nunavut over the past several weeks. One was detected in Rankin Inlet earlier this month, while another was found in Baker Lake in November.

Nunavummiut are reminded to call bylaw, a conservation officer or a regional environmental health officer if they see an animal frothing at the mouth, choking or making strange noises or staggering.

Even foxes that show no symptoms could still be infected. Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by a fox should inform staff at the local health centre.

Authorities should also be notified if your dog has had contact with foxes or wolves.
